Episode 2Wednesday, December 25, 2019 Eadie’s (Joanne Froggatt) desperation to conceive leads to a dangerous bargain with Shay (Ryan Corr). Her offer to take his National Service days at one of the city’s Resettlement Centres will seem a small price to pay for the chance to have a child but it will be the first of many costs. Eadie (Joanne Froggatt) and Shay (Ryan Corr) cross a dangerous rubicon when Shay helps cover up an ‘off the books’, immunity-compromising IVF procedure with serious potential side effects for mother and baby. At the same time Eadie and Lloyd’s (David Lyons) fertility woes deliver an unlikely bonus in the form of a major breakthrough in the fight against Chagas disease. Lloyd discovers the final piece of a ten year long scientific puzzle, putting him and Shay in the driver’s seat of a breakthrough which could save hundreds of thousands of lives. While Eadie waits to see whether the final implanted embryo will deliver a viable pregnancy she calls in to help her brother, Dom (Rupert Penry-Jones) and his wife, Francesca (Simone McAullay) chart the difficult terrain that comes with parenting a child on the spectrum. Eadie helps young Cosmo (Bede Warnock) make his own breakthrough and deliver his parents an unexpected gift. As the weather intensifies, Dom’s experiences on the front line of disaster capitalism make him more convinced that a Plan B for when things get really bad, is the only real way to keep his family safe.
