Cleo is organising a celebration to mark the girls' one year anniversary of becoming mermaids but when an accident in the café sets Ash and Zane against one another, the conflict quickly spreads to Emma and Rikki as they defend the actions of their respective boyfriends. Stuck in the middle of her feuding friends, Cleo is determined to keep their friendships from dissolving. With his date with Charlotte on the same night as the Cleo's party, Lewis' planning skills are put to the test.

While conducting research is hope of uncovering the secrets of the moon pool, Lewis discovers the work of Max Hamilton, who fifty years earlier found himself in much the same role that Lewis is in now. Lewis tracks down the old man but to earn his trust, Lewis risks betraying the girls' secret knowing the story Max has to tell will shed more light on the history of the moon pool and the girls' lockets.

Charlotte wants answers as to why Lewis is spending so much time with Cleo and the girls. Charlotte appears to be satisfied with Cleo's vague excuse that Lewis is simply helping them with a project, but her curiosity is piqued when, amongst Max's research papers, she spots an old photo of Gracie… her grandmother! Lewis is tasked with finding out exactly what Charlotte knows about her grandmother, but while looking for her own answers, Charlotte makes a startling discovery. Ash makes a well-intentioned attempt to help Emma overcome her apparent fear of water.

Further research takes her back to the moon pool on Mako Island where secrets are revealed and another mermaid is born. Lewis' relationship with Charlotte is put to the test by his inability to confide in her but Charlotte has no such reservations.

Against Rikki's better judgement, the girls agree to make Charlotte feel welcome as the newest member of the "mermaid club". Faced with the prospect of failing Phys-Ed because they have been avoiding swimming, the four girls are forced to work together when they find themselves together on the school's beach volleyball team. Charlotte learns there is more to being a mermaid than she thought and although the learning curve is steep, the final result is nothing short of... super.

To help Charlotte overcome fear of dolphins, Lewis takes her to the marine park to meet Ronnie. After Lewis runs afoul of Nate and his Jetski, his pacifist nature causes Charlotte to come to his defence. Can she be stopped before she goes too far and exposes the group's secret?
