A short film contest on the subject of real heroes captures the girls' imaginations. However, making a film about Emma's mother isn't Rikki's idea of fun so she decides to make her own film using her mermaid abilities to capture some impressive underwater footage. Inelligible to compete in the contest himself due to his father being one of the judges, Zane recruits Lewis to document his reenactment of his father's famous record-breaking windsurfing ride around Mako Island. When Zane gets into trouble in the shark-infested waters, Rikki is on hand to keep him safe.

Byron asks Emma for help training prior to the school swimming meet. After initially turning him down, Emma changes her mind but becomes a "heavy training dragon", all the while insisting to Rikki and Cleo that her interest has nothing to do with spending time with Byron and everything to do with seeing Zane defeated. Meanwhile, Lewis continues his experiments on the girls but Rikki doesn't like being treated like a specimen and does her best to disrupt his research.

After overhearing Miss Chatham and her concern for her "treasure", Zane pursues her boat when she departs the marina. Emma and Lewis catch up with them in time to help with a medical emergency but when Zane gets trapped on the sinking boat, Emma must risk the water to save him.

Miriam becomes the victim of her own scheming when Emma accidentally freezes her in the café's cool room forcing the girls to put aside their differences to defrost Miriam.

Events come to a head when Kim overhears Cleo on the phone and mistakenly comes to the conclusion that her sister has run away with Zane to elope. Meanwhile, Zane uses Cleo to gain access to the marine park's library to continue his sea monster research.
