Simon's psychiatrist, Alex, is drawn into his client's case, with Simon calling him for help on the night of his arrest. As the facts come to light, Alex realizes he has made a serious professional oversight with Simon, whom he had come to hold a particular fondness for — perhaps blindly. It becomes clear that Simon, who is still being held in custody since his arrest, is facing a serious criminal charge.

Certain that Simon, a schoolteacher, would never intentionally harm a child, Alex becomes deeply invested in uncovering just what is going on inside Simon's head — and why he took Sam. Simon's evasive answers to Alex's questioning are frustrating to Alex, however he finds himself deeply affected by Simon's unwavering romanticism, which hits close to home as Alex struggles with his recent separation, and its ramifications on his family.

Alex's personal and professional lives become even more deeply entangled as he tentatively initiates a romantic relationship with an old friend — and Simon's lawyer — Gina. However, their friendship faces challenges as Alex's misguided attempts to help Simon cause potential damage.

In scrutinizing Simon's actions, and his own role in them, Alex is forced to confront his ethical boundaries, and the meaning of relationships in his own life.
