In her search for answers, Scout encounters a fierce ally of Hedwig’s who reveals the dream he and Hedwig shared of beginning a new life — and how that dream was derailed by the true kingpin behind Eden’s drug trade.

Katia Van Der Linden, Scout and Hedwig’s old principal and Hedwig’s foster carer since childhood, visits Scout and reveals she and Hedwig argued after Scout left for New York. Katia refused to give Hedwig money, fearing she’d spend it on drugs, and Hedwig moved out to work for Saranya. After Katia also reveals that Saranya had a falling out with Hedwig and asked her to leave, Scout turns on her mother and her feckless partner, Huckleberry, blaming them for contributing to Hedwig’s disappearance. Retreating from this tense domesticity to smoke a joint in the grounds of the Wellness Centre, Scout realises someone is hiding in an abandoned shed, and discovers not Hedwig but Cam. Terri ed of being betrayed to the police, he reveals the story of his friendship with Hedwig — which began when she came to him looking for coke to sell to Dolan and soon led to the two of them drug-running together. Their friendship grew fast and wild, platonically head over heels and soon they were making plans for a future together in Sydney. But when they stole a batch of drugs, suspicion mistakenly fell on Tom Mulvaney and he paid the ultimate price when he was shot through the head by the man who ultimately controls the local drug trade — now revealed as Sergeant Ben Drysdale. Scout is shocked by the story of her best friend — a woman she’s coming to understand she barely knew — but offers to find Cam a car so he can leave town. Instead, she reveals his whereabouts to Detective Katz and leads him back to Cam’s hiding place.
