A man is brought into the ED with appalling injuries suffered after apparently falling 20 metres on a building site. Frank and the surgical team work hard to keep him alive and are spurred on when the man's wife and child come in to visit. But it's when his younger brother arrives that what actually happened becomes less clear.

A triathlete on the cusp of national selection arrives in the ED with serious respiratory problems that suggest asthma, but finding the real cause is a slow and fraught task. Michaeley doesn't have time to be sick, and certainly not to sit around waiting for tests to be done and results to surface. Zoe and Cate will have a struggle to uncover what's really wrong with Michaeley and an even harder time convincing her to accept treatment.

Sean struggles to deal with an aggressive drunk and the inappropriate behaviour of Jo. Sadly, Cate ends up caught in the middle and ends up in an embarrassing situation with Vincent.

Casey Taylor, dying of Muscular Dystrophy, returns to the ED, his condition having deteriorated badly since the last time we saw him [episode 9.30]. His father, Paul, is still refusing to accept that the end is near for his son. Frank is faced with the difficult task of trying to convince Paul that he should give his son permission to die.

Vincent returns from an MRU call out with a distraught man who, somehow, managed to get his leg caught in the conveyor belt mechanism of an automatic car wash. Vincent has done what he can to save Lane's leg but, in order to avoid amputation, it is critical that he get to theatre ASAP. The man, however, is determined to sort out his personal life before that happens. But that proves to be far more complicated than anyone could have imagined.

Cate arrives at work with a killer hangover and scant memory of what she actually did the night before. The day proves to be both professionally challenging as she deals with a woman who fears she is losing her baby and personally confronting as she feels the impact of her actions of the night before. Sean is not impressed with her behaviour of late but instead of his words getting through to her, they result in Cate heading off with Jo — perhaps for another night of debauchery.

Meanwhile, a well dressed, well nourished, grandmotherly woman is found wandering around the hospital car park in confusion. Bart employs the skills he learned on his psych rotation but there is obviously more to this situation than meets the eye. Zoe draws on a secret from her past to solve a medical mystery. Jack sits his surgeon's examination. He is reasonably confident, never a good state in which to enter an examination room.

Guest Starring: Jolene Anderson as Erica Templeton, Allison Cratchley as Zoe Gallagher, Andrew Supanz as Bartholomew West, Alexandra Fowler as Eve Ballantyne; Virginia Gay as Gabrielle Jaeger, John Tarrant as Lane Wilson, Jacinta Stapleton as Jo Henderson, Betty Lucas as Hannah McNamara, Steve Rodgers as Paul Taylor, James Ryan as Casey Taylor, Rebecca Massey as Melissa Wilson, Matt Cheney as Bruno, Katie Wall as Rhiannon Andrews, Mark Constable as Dominic Andrews

Note: John Tarrant (difficult patient Lane Wilson) may be familiar to viewers from his years ('88-'92) on A Country Practice where his wife was played by ex-All Saint Georgie Parker.

Directed by Bill Hughes

The day is not starting out well for Frank Campion. Arriving late for work he is forced to cut short a conversation with a grieving parent, Paul Taylor, to assist with an incoming MVA patient, Leonard Stormont. The young angelic-looking man is in fact a prisoner who was being transferred to court when the prison van rolled. There are more casualties due in from the crash meaning Erica can't be of assistance due to her connection through her brother and Cate is so far missing in action. They are therefore a couple of nurses down forcing Frank to assign Bart to nursing duties.

To add to the pressure of the day Cate does finally surface, albeit brought in by Jo, unconscious and convulsing following an overdose of GBH. She is treated by a less than forgiving Sean, and further alienates those in the ED when she rebuffs their attempts to reach out to her. Gabrielle warns her she's on shaky ground but it doesn't stop Cate losing it with Frank, an outburst that might just cost Cate her job. But is this maybe what she has been after all along, only was too scared to admit?

Although initially angry at being excluded from treating any of the patients from the prison van rollover, Erica quickly learns her brother was involved in the crash and has escaped from the scene. She also learns that he was being transferred to court to face charges of murder. Erica is reeling. Is the brother she knew and loved lost to her forever? Dan finally admits the secret he was keeping on AJ's behalf about the truth of what's been happening in Merrivale prison. But rather than being thankful for the news, Erica's furious at Dan for keeping it from her. And when she finds Dan talking to an injured AJ out in the hospital grounds and watches as he lets AJ escape, she feels utterly betrayed and ends their friendship. The situation only gets worse when Dan finds AJ waiting for him at day's end, his injuries and fear of going down for murder making him all the more desperate.

When a child is brought in showing obvious signs of child abuse, Zoe seems to be the only one coming to the mother's defence, desperately searching for an alternative explanation. But when the evidence continues to stack up against the mother, Zoe must face up to the possibility that she's letting her own experience cloud her judgement.

And Frank must face up to the ultimate day of judgement when an increasingly unhinged Paul Taylor confronts him with a gun. But will it be Frank that pays the price?
