Six months after Rachel left Manchester, pregnant and confused over who the father of her unborn child was, she suddenly turns up on David and Karen's doorstep. Did she have the baby and who is the father? Adam's life meanwhile has descended into bachelor squalor as he dreams of a perfect life with Rachel and their new child. To get Adam out of his deprression, Jenny decides that Adam needs to start dating again. Pete comes up with the perfect candidate - one of his workmates, Amy. Jenny and Pete's marital problems have just taken a turn for the worse. Jenny has become obsessed with Adam since their brief but passionate kiss six months ago. She spends a great deal of her time fantasising about being with him and even getting married. David receives the shock of his life when his is made redundant at work. Meanwhile Pete spots Rachel in the supermarket with a baby of unknown identity and gives chase, armed with a camera…

Pete is left in shock by Jenny's announcement that she doesn't love him anymore. He enlists Adam's help in finding out why—and just who the current target of her affections is. Meanwhile, David is thoroughly enjoying his role as an attentive, caring father, but he is causing the rest of the household to grow a few new grey hairs. Adam tries to break off his relationship with Amy, whose persistence further impedes a possible reconciliation with Rachel.

Episode 2.3

David arranges a wedding anniversary surprise for Karen, an occasion he usually forgets. However, as Karen assumes that he will forget as usual, she arranges a weekend in Paris. Rachel, after her disastrous attempt to get back together with Adam, decides to do something positive for herself and gets her job back at the advertising agency where she worked before going to London. Danny, a younger member of the team, plucks up the courage to ask her out on a date and she agrees. Jenny meanwhile suggests Adam place an ad in a lonely hearts column. As he waits for his date at the restaurant, Rachel and Danny, her much younger coworker, arrive, leading to a disaterous evening for all involved. Pete is forced to go on an adventure weekend with work. He is pleased that Amy is going for although he is dreading it, he does have a companion for the weekend. On the second day of the adventure weekend, Pete and Amy get lost in the woods. When the skies open and rain falls, they look for shelter, luckily stumbling on a motel. As they are booking the rooms in reception, Amy suggests that they stay together in one. Pete accepts and the pair share a night of passion.

Episode 2.4

After a particularly dull and boring dinner party, Karen decides she hates the person she has become so she throws out all of her designer clothes and persuades Rachel to have a tattoo done with her. Rachel, who has been contemplating splitting from Danny because of his dull friends, is herself dumped by him for the same reasons. Now wracked with guilt and confused by his feelings, Pete confesses the affair to Adam who is shocked and disgusted by Pete's actions and can't quite believe it is true. However he reluctantly agrees to keep it a secret to spare Jenny. Pete and Adam receive invites to their school reunion. Adam is persuaded to go after hearing that his childhood sweetheart Amanda Wagstaff will be there. Now that she is single following a divorce, Adam fancies his chances. While things don't go well for Adam with Amanda, Rachel hooks up with one of Adam's old teachers and the pair agree to go out. Pete starts to come home every night after Adam's ultimatum that if the affair wasn't finished he'd tell all to Jenny. Jenny uncovers Pete's affair. She confronts Pete as he leaves Amy's house, handing little Adam over to Amy and walking away. Only when she is a safe distance from the house does she break down.

Episode 2.5

Adam ends up in bed with a girl after a night at the pub but has difficulty performing, a quick trip to the doctor results in a startling diagnosis—Adam has testicular cancer. Things finally come to a head between Jenny and Pete as their tempestuous marriage forces Jenny to make a decision. After first kicking him out of the house, Jenny then decides she wants a divorce. While trying to talk Jenny and Pete out of getting a divorce, Adam confesses to having cancer. The pair are shocked into silence and vow to keep it a secret. Adam goes to the hospital for his operation and wakes to see Rachel by his bedside. He assumes he's hallucinating, but as all the friends arrive, he realises that Pete and Jenny have let the cat out of the bag. They tell Adam that they have decided to give things another go and the Pete says that he has moved back into the house. Meanwhile, David's younger brother Nick arrives at the Marsden household unannounced. David is none too happy about Nick's arrival as they have never got along, and suspects that he is after something. Rachel moves into Adam's place to look after him now that he is home from hospital, a situation that quickly leads to a reconciliation.

Episode 2.6

To celebrate the millennium Rachel, Adam, Jenny and Pete join Karen and David for a holiday on Holy Island. Needing to escape from David's over-organised island, Adam and Pete take a mall boat back to the mainland to grab a couple of pints and get some takeaway pizza to bring back for dinner. When the boat stalls on the way back, Adam and Pete become starnded on the high seas. Meanwhile, Rachel begins to worry about Adam's whereabouts and the others set about searching the island. Karen and David reveal to their friends that they will be adding another member to their family. The six friends enjoy a celebration meal and afterwards Adam suggests that they all go outside to watch the new dawn rise. Everyone agrees and they all spend a night under the stars and wait for the dawn on the new millennium.
