The Twist family (dad Tony, twins Linda and Pete and youngest Bronson) arrive from the city at their new home, an old lighthouse, to find that the toilet is haunted. After each of the kids encounters the ghost, they decide to catch it and make the toilet safe again — and return a valuable painting to its rightful owner.

The villainous Mr Gribble is trying to have Nell, who says she has seen a dragon, committed as insane so that he and a group of Arab investors can buy her cottage. The kids set out to prove her sanity and save her house by finding the dragon and retrieving Nell's missing rubies.

After an accident, Linda has a dream while in the operating theatre in which she has a misshapen nose. Linda takes her big nose to Aunt Tuneless's shack in the mountains. There she finds herself in the middle of a war between Aunt Tuneless and her neighbour Foxy. The odd couple can inflict their own ailments each other by playing the gum leaves from a twisted tree. Linda's problem is solved with a different kind of twist.

The Twist children see a ghost dog, whom they discover to be the dog of old Ben Byron. Ben Byron was a sailor who jumped into the sea to save his dog when it was washed overboard. Both Ben and his dog drowned. When Pete touches the dog he is inflicted with a bizarre and embarrassing speech defect. He compulsively adds the words "without my pants" to the end of every sentence with hilarious and embarrassing results. The children discover that the ghost dog is attempting to recover and put back together the dispersed bones of Ben Byron so that his body can rest in peace. At the same time Mr Gribble wants to organise a treasure hunt around the bones of Ben Byron as a tourist attraction for the town.

The commotion is enough to stir up the ghosts of Nell's family, who haunt a room at the top of the lighthouse, and definitely do not want to be disturbed. With the help of the friendly ghosts, the Twists win the battle to save their home.
