Uncertain if Zac has the trident, the girls' worst fear is realised when they return to Mako island and discover it is gone. However, Zac is having no luck unlocking the trident's powers and he decides there is only one person who might have the knowledge he needs — Rita. He tags along while Evie interviews Rita for the school magazine at her house but Evie's probing questions prompt Lyla to remind Zac that it is his secret that Evie is getting dangerously close to uncovering as well. While the girls are busy, Zac searches the house and discovers the secret entrance to the grotto. Curious about what secrets the grotto holds, Zac returns to the grotto through the ocean entrance but he is confronted by the girls. Expecting to be punished, Evie is taken aback by Rita's praise for her work. Zac however, gets a lecture from Rita on the trident's dangers but her refusal to go into detail only fuels his curiosity — as does Rita's strange reaction to the trident. Seeing the girls at school, Zac ditches class and moves the trident to a warehouse owned by David's brother. Cam unwittingly leads the girls to the warehouse where a fight for the trident ensues and Zac unleashes the trident's power on Sirena. Zac and Cam get into fight at school over Zac's decision to return the trident. Rita invites Zac to join the girls' training sessions hoping to ease the turmoil Zac is feeling about living in two different worlds — one on land, and one at sea. With the trident safe, Sirena suggests their next step is to get Zac into the Moon Pool during a full moon to take away his powers. Nixie refuses to trust Zac, more so when he's reluctant to surrender his powers, but Sirena and Lyla don't share her strong feelings and are willing to give him a chance. Lyla spends time with Zac teaching him about mermaid/merman history and even takes him back to the Moon Pool. Cam orchestrates a crisis for Nixie at the café and plays the hero to keep her secret from being revealed. Afterwards, he offers to work with her to get Zac back to normal. Lyla shocks the others when she reveals she wants to plead Zac's case to the Mermaid Council in hopes of getting him accepted into the pod. Nixie's vehement oppostion causes a rift between herself and the others forcing her to turn to the only other person she can — Cam.©tzuk

On Mako, Nixie refuses to work with Evie but relents and opens the cave in front of her using one of Rita's Moon Rings. Inside the cave, Cam opens the portal and he and Evie enter the water chamber. Cam retrieves the trident but with Nixie's ring losing power, she cannot hold the doorway open and Evie does not make it out in time. With Evie's air running out, Nixie rushes off to get another ring only to encounter Zac, Lyla and Sirena who have arrived on Mako Island after discovering what Cam and Nixie are up. Sirena is able to use her Moon Ring to reopen the portal allowing Zac to rescue Evie. As Zac and the girls are confessing everything to Evie, Cam speeds away from Mako Island with the trident.©tzuk

Decision Time

<

Episode 1.26
Written by Sam Carroll
Directed by Grant Brown

Cam assures Nixie the trident is safe and shows it to her in his school locker. Satisfied, Nixie enjoys the thought that all their troubles will soon be behind them after the next full moon. Also looking ahead, Lyla and Sirena ask Rita to join them when they return to the pod but Rita turns down the offer, having made a life for herself on land. Zac explains his reason for lying to Evie who casts all the blame on the girls but agrees to keep his secret for one day. Sirena says goodbye to David who realises he will never see her again.

Cam's manipulations continue as he tells Evie the mermaids will never turn Zac back to normal and that furthermore, the coming full moon will allow them to make his change permanent. Lyla overhears the entire conversation and tells Sirena and Nixie who reassures the others that Cam can be trusted. However, when Nixie attempts to show them the trident in Cam's locker to prove her point it is gone. Trident in hand, Cam makes his way to Mako Island to size the power of the trident for himself.

Meanwhile, Evie warns Zac not to trust the girls and threatens to tell the world everything. When she explains the warning came from Cam, Zac realises what his friend has been up to and races to Mako Island to stop him. Having also realised her mistake in trusting Cam, Nixie and the girls collect Rita's Moon Rings and head to Mako as well. Zac confronts Cam and in their ensuing struggle, Zac is knocked unconscious giving Cam free access to the Moon Pool just as the full moon begins to rise high above Mako Island.

Cam enters the Moon Pool the same way Zac did on the night of his transformation but Cam's fall into the pool is arrested mid-air by the girls who use their rings to keep him levitated above the water. As the power of the girls' rings begins to weaken under the stress, Cam descends closer and closer towards the water — and the power he so desperately seeks. Suddenly, Zac breaches up out of the Moon Pool and forces the trident from Cam's grasp, smashing it against the cave wall. As the full moon exits from view overhead, Cam is released and falls harmlessly into the water as the last power in the broken trident fades out.

For saving the Moon Pool, Rita gives the girls their Moon Rings. Sirena returns to the café to see David. Zac tells Evie he's still a merman and Evie apologises to the girls. As Zac and the girls go out for a swim, Cam walks alone along the beach...©tzuk
