Since the senseless death of his wife and child in a car accident, Dr Spence McKay keeps himself as busy as possible, sharing his time between his private practice and Canal Road, an inner-city community centre. Spence can't believe it when Greg Manor turns up at Canal Road. Responsible for killing his wife and child in a car accident, he's out on early parole. Believing the legal system has failed, Spence takes matters into his own hands and attempts to kill him before Manor blurts out it wasn't an accident. Before Spence can find out any more information, Manor dies of a heroin overdose and with him the truth of what really happened.

After Holly saves a traumatised drug addict, Tracey, from her violent parolee boyfriend, Colin, she finds herself the target of a frightening stalking campaign, and suspects it too be the smooth, but violent, Jack Logan. Spence receives a series of security camera photos of himself, including one of him and Greg Manor, from an anonymous source. A threat or a warning? His inability to track down the sender of the photos renders him unable to find out more about Ellen and Toby's mysterious deaths.
