John Stevens, the veterinary surgeon at Gatten's Creek is called Woobinda (the animal doctor) by the Aborigines. His eighteen-year-old daughter Tiggie helps him with most of his work although his real assistant is Peter Fischer, who passed all his examinations in Germany. Peter is gaining experience with Mr. Stevens and hopes to set himself up as an animal doctor on his own very soon. The other member of the household are Jack Johnson, the handyman, and Kevin Stevens, an Aboriginal boy who has been adopted by John Stevens. - Victor Barnes
