Summer Heights High: articles

Chris Lilley back for more at ABC

Think you know what goes on at high school? Well, think again. Production begins today on ABC TV's new series, Summer Heights High, written by and starring comedian Chris Lilley, the creator of the multi-award winning, We Can Be Heroes. The eight-part series is set in a suburban high school over the course of a school term.

Continuing the successful mockumentary format of We Can Be Heroes, Chris will play multiple characters in the series, including Mr G, the delusional dance and drama teacher who sees himself as friend, counsellor and inspiration to his students. More than just a teacher, Mr G is an entertainment industry professional!

Summer Heights High will be shot in Melbourne on location over 11 weeks. A co-production between ABC TV and Princess Pictures, the series will be directed by Stuart McDonald (MDA, Sea Change, Stranded) and produced by Laura Waters (We Can Be Heroes, Kath & Kim). Executive Producer for ABC TV is Bruce Kane (We Can Be Heroes, Spicks and Specks).

ABC TV Head of Arts and Entertainment, Courtney Gibson, can't wait for class to begin at Summer Heights High. "Chris Lilley will satirise the contemporary realities of Australian school culture like no one before him. This will be the most anticipated start of a school term ever."

We Can Be Heroes was awarded Most Outstanding Comedy at this year's Logies and Chris received the Graham Kennedy Award for Most Outstanding New Talent. He also won the prestigious international Rose d'Or Award for Best Male Comedy Performance of the year. We Can Be Heroes is currently screening around the world including in the US on the Sundance Channel.
