MADELEINE West, who rose to recognition in Neighbours, has begun filming the most controversial role of her career.

West has a major role in Satisfaction, a TV drama that explores the lives of five women who work in an inner-city brothel.

West, who plays the sophisticated Mel, is joined in the cast by Alison Whyte, Diana Glenn, Bojana Novakovic and Peta Sergeant.

Satisfaction, a 10-part drama for Foxtel's Showtime channel, promises to give insight into the world's oldest profession, illustrating how the women juggle the pressures of their private and professional lives.

Series creator Roger Simpson said the story demanded actors with a deep humanity.

"The roles are personally challenging, especially given the environment we're creating," Simpson said.

"It was critical we engage actors who are prepared to extend themselves and push boundaries that haven't been present in Australian drama.

"We are delighted these remarkable actors will be telling these provocative and touching stories."

Satisfaction will screen on Foxtel later this year.
