Daniel McCallum returns to his rural Tasmanian hometown of Rosehaven to help his intimidating mother with her real estate business. He gets a surprise when his best friend from the mainland, Emma, turns up on his doorstep — on the run from a marriage so fresh her husband is still on their honeymoon.

In no time these two friends are thrown into the centre of small town life — Daniel, confronted at every turn by the ghosts of his adolescent past and a town that hasn't moved on. All the while his mate Emma is lapping up her anonymity in Rosehaven and newfound life on the lam.

Daniel's fearsome mother Barbara has never needed him for anything. But backed into a corner with an injury she needs to undergo surgery for, Barbara has summoned Daniel across the Bass Strait to babysit her business — McCallum Real Estate.

But Daniel has other ideas. He wants to take over the family business and prove to his mother that he has what it takes to succeed. But now he's also navigating the surprise arrival of his mate Emma. Emma is in no hurry to grow up, and a new town with no ties suits her far too well.

The real estate agent in a small town is at the centre of every crisis — births, deaths and everything in between that will have you upsizing, downsizing or moving on. And as the only agents in Rosehaven, soon enough these two best buddies Daniel and Emma will find both their friendship and their sanity put to the test by the charming, but deeply eccentric, townsfolk of Rosehaven.

It's Daniel and Emma's first day at the office and already they are facing the unique difficulties of running a real estate agency in a small town. The only locksmith in town has retired and his son Damienwants to take over the family business. The only problem is, no one in the local Neighbourhood Watch (led by the very unreasonable Olive) trusts Damien — he's 'odd' — and they certainly don't want him to have unrestricted access to their properties.

Daniel and Emma decide to meet Damien to suss him out for themselves. After visiting Damien in his home — and finding, much to Emma's delight, that he's quite the hoarder — Daniel and Emma agree that he seems trustworthy enough. After confirming with the local police officer Greg that Damien doesn't have a criminal record — Emma convinces Daniel to hold a meeting with the Neighbourhood Watch to inform them Damien will be McCallum Real Estate's locksmith of choice, they reluctantly agree.

Later that day, Daniel and Emma are visited at the office by Rosehaven's lone Police Officer, the very anxious Greg — who informs them that multiple people in the town have had items stolen from their home. There are no signs of a break-in leading everyone to believe it's Damien's fault. A large mob of angry Neighbourhood Watch members descend on Damien's home and Greg enlists the help of Daniel and Emma to help talk them down and find out if Damien is the thief that they all feared he would be.

With his mum returning home soon, Daniel is determined to sell a house and prove to Barbara he's just as capable as her at running McCallum Real Estate. An upcoming open home will give him that opportunity, but it's at risk of being derailed when Emma uploads the wrong photos to the website — photos that the owner John has heavily photoshopped, so much so that there's a fake majestic mountain behind the house.

Barbara finds out when she checks the website from hospital and insists Daniel cancel the open home, but the flyers have already been sent out and the owner wants to proceed. Emma suggests that 'everyone loves free stuff' — so if they can get some food or gifts to hand out at the open home, maybe people won't be as angry when they see the very run down house. Daniel and Emma fail to convince the local businesses that the exposure from handing out their product at the open home is worth it (most of them have a monopoly already), so Emma makes some chocolate crackles and they hope for the best!

The next day at the open home — most people are surprised that the house looks different (very different), but are placated by the free food and remain more confused than angry. The owner John however is taking all criticisms to heart and soon starts yelling at potential buyers who are pointing out the house's many flaws. And then there are the spiders being hurled over the fence from the angry neighbour next door...

After failing to make a go of it — following the earlier open home debacle, it's Emma and Daniel's last day in Rosehaven and Emma is determined to have as much fun as possible. After visiting Daniel's childhood cubby house — only to find it's been overrun by Daniel's old school bully, Bruce — Emma convinces Daniel that even though he didn't do a brilliant job of running McCallum Real Estate, he should try and do all the other things he wished he could have done in Rosehaven, particularly stand up to his nemesis Bruce. Daniel is reluctant but the office is quiet and there's nothing left for him to do so he allows Emma to drag him to Bruce's house.

Face-to-face with Bruce, Daniel buckles under the pressure. Emma has a plan to get Daniel to take on smaller challenges to rid himself of childhood defeats — in the hope of his returning to Bruce and confronting him once and for all. One of her challenges includes declaring to his ex-girlfriend (and town GP) Grace that he still likes her. When Daniel comes to the end of Emma's bucket list, he is finally ready to confront Bruce.

After arriving at Bruce's house once again and discovering he's not home, Daniel and Emma decide to spend their final night at Rosehaven's local pub. Many, many drinks later Bruce arrives at the pub with several of his mates only to be confronted by a very tipsy and annoyed Daniel. It doesn't go well...

Daniel has been opening some of Barbara's mail (he finally convinced her to work from home while she heals) and discovers that McCallum Real Estate is in real financial trouble. He tells Emma they need to make some cuts and he has an idea — firing their eighty-four-year old receptionist Mrs. Marsh. Emma is horrified. How could Daniel fire a woman who has known him his whole life and who has worked at the business since the beginning? Plus, she's just about the sweetest lady ever. There has to be another way.

Daniel concedes that if the accountant they're meeting later has any better ideas he'll go for them. Emma is happy with this and suggests they brainstorm over lunch — and they could, if Daniel wasn't already having lunch with Grace. These days Grace and Daniel are officially boyfriend and girlfriend. Grace's influence on Daniel means he's exercising more, eating better and basically engaging in all the things Emma can't understand people would do on purpose.

It also means Daniel has less time to spend with Emma. In a gesture of goodwill Daniel invites Emma to join them for their lunch (picnic) where Emma feels the third wheel and exits hastily. Later, Daniel and Emma meet at the accountant (an extremely young girl that Daniel used to babysit) who has another idea that could save them money and save Mrs. Marsh.

Daniel tells Emma that he and his girlfriend Grace are leaving Rosehaven for good. This leaves Emma with the choice of staying on without him, or going back to Melbourne to try and get her old job back at Flight Centre. Neither of them know when they'll see each other again. Emma says it's fine (it's not) and they head out to their last inspection together only to discover that tenants Daniel approved have trashed McCallum Real Estate's most important property.

To make matters worse, the owner is coming to town in a few days to inspect it. Daniel and Emma lie to Barbara and tell her the property is 'gooooood', in order to buy time to get it cleaned. After they are unsuccessfully trying to hire professional cleaners (none of them will go near it). Daniel and Emma's only option is to do it themselves. So. It's a working bee!

Grace and Damien come to help, but this doesn't stop Daniel and Emma gradually becoming more and more frustrated with each other. The need to have the house clean before Barbara finds out, and the elephant in the room that is Daniel's departure — lead to tensions rising to boiling point between Emma and Daniel. After a day of cleaning they have barely made a dent, they will have to pull an all-nighter.

Early the next morning, the team are delirious, exhausted but still working. In this state and with tensions high, something Emma draws on the wall is the tipping point to the biggest fight Daniel and Emma have ever had.
