1981. Rita gets out of jail after a twelve-month stretch for a crime her son committed. But she doesn't take it well when she discovers Wolf is doing time at the Horsemen headquarters to keep the peace between the biker gang and Ted's gang. Ted's running low on both money and ideas to get Wolf out and Phineas takes revenge for Carol's broken jaw ending the temporary truce. The gloves are off in the war with the Horsemen and there's a storm in a teacup... actually a whole tea-set.

July 1981. The Springbok tour is about to divide a country, but their cash-laden white supporters may provide a golden opportunity for Ted and the gang. Rita helps seek revenge for a prison friend and meets Evan Lace, her high roller ex at a swingers' party and asks for a job for Wolf. Lefty and Ngaire gorge themselves on the forbidden fruits at the party. Bert and Falani experience police racism, but to save Falani from prison Bert has to snitch on the anti-tour movement. Rita has big plans for her son and even bigger ones for his new boss, but Ted knows nothing about it.

Ted and the boys take a road trip to Gisborne to steal a large chunk of money from South African supporters. Back home Ngaire and Lefty's daughter, Chelsea, is attacked in the park. Rita calls the cops but they don't take it seriously. Bert finds being a snitch in the anti-tour movement does have its attractions. Encouraged by Mike McCarthy, the women join the local neighbourhood watch to catch the park perpetrator, but discover Sparky is the main suspect. When the South African job scores a zero, Lefty and Ted clash. The Wests and the cops unite for a night to catch the deviant and clear Sparky's name.

Rita's ambitious career path for Wolf hits some bumps when he gets fired, which angers Rita and pleases his boss. Bert and Falani take a road trip to Hamilton to watch the Waikato/Springbok game and switch sides twice in the game that never was. Wolf enlists Sparky and Eric to go on a frozen fishing expedition for Evan. The long-suffering Ngaire seeks affection and romance, but could Mike McCarthy be a fatal attraction? Ted twiddles his thumbs and Rita surprises him with a job offer. And Phineas' world comes crashing down when his mother dies.

Rita's past catches up with her on her 20th wedding anniversary. Phineas is not taking the death of his mum well and he's about to get a rude shock from beyond the grave. Carol works out a way to mourn her mother-in-law just in time to celebrate the wedding of Charles and Diana. The nuptials bring out some skeletons for Ngaire who blames Rita for her miserable marriage. Rita and Bilkey share a secret. Bert gets serious with Riana and the anti-tour movement after she's bashed by the cops, and the gang take revenge on the police social club.

Ted's work dries up when the South African job stalls again, while Rita's second-hand business expands. Rita struggles to keep Ted in the dark about what Wolf is really up to with Evan. Wolf and his gang get offside with the Dallies and Ted. Wolf discovers the perks of the job with Joanne and the elusive safe for Rita. Wolf impresses Evan when he burns down the Dallies' fish factory, much to Ted's disgust. Bert and Riana take the power off the people just in time for kickoff in the first test against the Springboks and Ted realizes there's a new world order which he doesn't want a part of.

Ted and the boys go hunting for the elusive South African cash down country. Bert's rapid rise in the anti-tour movement causes suspicion from within, but there's more immediate danger when he uncovers Ngaire and Mike's affair and tells Rita. Rita has expansion plans for the Galleria but there's some logistics problems to add to her personal ones. Rita gives Ngaire an ultimatum and a job. Mike McCarthy owes Rita big time when she agrees to keep the affair a secret. Carol looks to jazzercise to help get pregnant. The gang strikes out again with the South Africans, but Ted's act of kindness may still be rewarded and Phineas and Bert are mistaken for big game.

The stuttering South African job creates tension in the cash-strapped gang, Rita, Ngaire and Carol end up financially supporting their husbands… which doesn't go down well. Carol embarks on an intoxicating scheme to get Phineas' sperm secretly tested. Rita's grand plan for Evan could be unhinged by Wolf's affair with Joanne. Lefty and Phineas go against the gang's wishes and rob the RSA, with disastrous results. Lefty's arrest and impending prison sentence puts Mike in a compromising situation with Ngaire, who delivers an ultimatum. Lefty tries to save himself and offers to rat on Ted. While the gang's days look numbered, Rita and Ted's jobs are about to cross and it just could be the Wests against the rest.

Rita feels the pressure of her first job in charge with a cast of thousands, but her main worries are closer to home. Falani's youth group steals Evan's prized possessions, his classic cars. When Evan leaves the house, Rita and her crew cleans him out thoroughly, but the main prize eludes her. Lefty and Phineas are left out in the cold and Carol discovers Phineas' sperm is out for the count. When Evan arrives home to an empty house, he takes it extremely hard and suspects those closest to him. Wolf thinks Rita went too far with Evan and his divided loyalties irk Ted. Rita suspects she's been be played by Belinda and Joanne.

Belinda's unhappy with Rita about the missing jewelry as the fallout from Evan's job continues. Ngaire calls Lefty on being a rat and files for divorce. Wolf's loyalty to Evan complicates Ted's plans. Evan reneges on selling land to the South Africans with tragic consequences for Des. Ted's gang joins the anti-tour movement for the afternoon as a cover to steal the money while the South African's are at the game. Ngaire moves in with Mike, but an armed Lefty lurks. Ted and Rita finally get their hands on the riches, but have they lost a son?
