Period One: The Appalling Mr Gormsby

Tepapawai is a Decile 2 school. It has one of the highest staff turnovers in the country and since their last damning ERO Report the hapless Principal, Roger Dasent, can't find enough relieving teachers, certainly no teacher in the school wants to be put in charge of the out of control, law unto themselves boys in 5F. In desperation Dasent places ads on the Internet and ads in education gazettes in places as varied as Bangladesh and Chernobyl and still gets no takers - and he has to reach for the folder at the bottom of his filing cabinet and make a phone call to the one person he had hoped he would never have to speak to again... Mr Gormsby!

The school's unionised staff hold a meeting which moves to have Gormsby removed from his job at the school. Dasant submits to the union's demand after they threaten to strike but must reverse his decision when the union is forced to challenge the dismissal of their newest member. Meanwhile, Agnes finds herself pregnant with Steve's child.

Open Day at Tepapawai sees Steve's class making a video and Gormsby's training for carpark security detail, in which they learn lethal combat and how to field-strip a semi-automatic rifle. Meanwhile, Agnes attempts to take her own life and the new computer suite burns down.

Roger, on discovering the funding benefits, agrees to take on a boy with a learning disablility — and then goes about the recruiting as many special needs students as possible. Meanwhile, Gormsby attempts to teach the boys cricket which leads to a match with the staff — with rather unfortunate results.

With the Education Review Office report due out later in the day the school awaits the worst and Roger ends up in the asylum. With Roger out of the way, Steve takes over as principle and implements the staffing changes recommended by the ERO. Meanwhile, Alistair gets AIDs, that is according to Gormsby.
