BRETT Tucker is enjoying life on the McLeod's Daughters farm but his new TV role does present some sticky situations.

Tucker, who recently joined the show's cast as a local veterinarian, was in for some shocks while researching his role.

The biggest shock of all came while spending a day with a rural vet, who was tending an ill cow.

"I was standing there and the vet was up to his shoulder with his arm in this cow's bum.

"He had this shoulder-length glove on while checking this cow and he looks over at me and says 'do you want a go?', " Tucker says.

Even though his every instinct said "no", the actor slipped the glove on and had his first taste of life as a vet.

But while dealing intimately with cattle may be new for Tucker, the Australian country is not. Tucker grew up in Warburton, in Victoria's Yarra Valley.

"I did a bit of farm work," he says of the time. "I didn't live on a farm but I rode horses and there were farms all around us."

Despite his early run-in with the wrong end of a cow, Tucker says he enjoys working with the show's animals and in the outdoors.

"The animals are a real bonus… although they do urinate whenever they like, but so do the cast," he laughs.

Tucker plays an outspoken character named Dave Brewer in McLeod's Daughters who "raises a few eyebrows with his frankness".

Upon visiting Drovers Run, Dave takes a liking to Tess McLeod and Tucker hints that romance is on the cards.
