Kath is enjoying life as an empty nester until her recently married daughter Kim moves back in, insisting her marriage to Brett is over. Kath has caught the eye of a certain butcher named Kel Knight and has a feeling in her waters that Kel is about to make their sensual relationship a mere formality. Kim begins to suspect Brett is having an affair and has her second best friend Sharon stalk him, with disastrous results.

Brett's relationship with a 75kg Rottweiler by the name of Cujo has Kim's nose out of joint. Kim swears off men and takes up golf with Sharon. This leads Kath to suspect Kim is a lesbian. When Kath voices her theory to Kel, he reasons that homosexual activity isn't unusual or uncommon: after all he was in the navy for six years. Kath begins to question her relationship with Kel. Kim's out to sow her rolled oats and, with encouragement from Sharon, they go speed-dating at the local pub where Sharon meets fiddler Mark. None of the men are interested in Kim and she calls Brett to come rescue her.

Kath's wedding plans are thrown into chaos when she discovers that Kim has really stacked on the weight after quitting smoking and doesn't fit into her bridesmaid's dress. She tries the Celine Cuisine diet plan, based on Celine Dion's diet. Sharon discovers self-help and motivational books and considers marriage counselling as a career. Sharon's reading is soon put to the test as a complete breakdown of all relationships erupts. A round table counselling session produces startling revelations, but talk to the face 'cos the hand ain't listening!

Kim discovers something she's really good at — internet chat rooms and online shopping with Kath's credit card. With the help of a modem, Kim is determined to meet the man of her dreams. Beware the lace snap crotch teddy! Kel asks Brett to be his best man.

Kim organises Kath's hen's night after rejecting Sharon's idea — a marathon session of Rocky and Mighty Ducks videos. With a stick-on bra, fake tan and a one-sleeved top, Kath is ready to party! Kel doesn't want a Buck's turn, but Kim doesn't think that's normal — blokes are supposed to write themselves off before their wedding — so she gets Brett to take him out on the tear. Kath and Kim have a night to remember after their drinks are apparently "spiked". Kel and Brett's sedate "Buck's turn" ends horribly when they are robbed and chained up in their underwear outside Flinders Street Station.

With punch served from the rubbish bin and a tarp over the clothesline, the guests arrive at 4.45pm for a 4.46pm start. A unique chain of events leads to a nuptials that no one will ever forget, well not quickly anyway.
