City Homicide: articles

Nadine Garner

Grown up: Nadine Garner has had a "fantastic varied career" since the days of The Henderson Kids with Kylie Minogue.

Stubborn Nadine

IN 1985, there were few Aussie stars bigger than Nadine Garner.

As the star of acclaimed kids show The Henderson Kids, Garner's popularity bordered on cult status among the younger generation.

Starring alongside a young Kylie Minogue, she attracted plenty of industry speculation that she was the next big thing.

But while Minogue took the soapie actor-to-pop star path, Garner, the star of Channel 7's highly anticipated new drama, City Homicide, chose a different journey.

In the past 22 years, Garner has worked in theatre, film and television and found time for a family and a child, now 18 months old.

So how did she do the seemingly impossible in maintaining a healthy career for so long in Australia?

"Stubbornness," she laughed to Confidential.

"You've got to just really love it and try to choose the jobs that are going to challenge you, and sometimes those are not the ones that are so commercial.

"Sometimes there are really high spots and there are low spots and you've just got to believe that that's what you're supposed to be doing."

Despite appearing in films The Book of Revelations and Razzle Dazzle, and making countless television appearances, Garner said she was still most often remembered by the public for her Henderson Kids' character, Tammy.

"It's really sweet," she said. "It's only annoying when people ask, 'So what have you done since then?' Yeah, that's annoying because that was over 20 years ago and I've had a really fantastic varied career.

"If a journalist asks me what have you done since then, then they tend to get the cold shoulder."
