Series 2

When it comes to special brands of chaos, the Chalmers-Davis and Hernandez families are the gifts that keep on giving, and while Oly (Nathalie Morris) and Santi (Carlos Sanson Jr) continue to get to know each other, they discover just how much families can mess you up. Meanwhile, Angie (Claudia Karvan) ​​and Dom (Angus Sampson) continue to deal with the fallout of their separation and the complicated new relationships and dramas they have found themselves immersed in. With life still freshly turned upside down, Oly and Santi have to make some big decisions as they juggle a work-life balance that includes high school and baby J, while building for their own future.

Rosa unleashes on the Chalmers-Davis house, seemingly on the warpath after the revelation of Angie and Matias’ relationship, with Dom the only one she feels like con ding in. Matias being banished to the food truck brings back childhood memories for Santi of when his mum died and Matias wasn’t available to him. Santi is motivated to step up as a father, and insists on doing his equal share of parenting even though Oly is still breastfeeding, and he enlists Vince’s help to give Oly a night off (if deciphering breast-pump instructions can be considered a night off...). Out of his depth, Santi soldiers on with some unusual parenting advice from Vince, but gives in and returns to Oly, feeling disappointed in how his plans turned out, and stirring up his fears. But he is unable to share his feelings with Oly, leaving her confused. Oly reaches out to Angie, and when she sees the new living arrangements for her parents, convinces Angie she needs to spruce up her life a bit. Feeling judged, Angie reacts in an impulsive way, but is met with a realisation she wasn’t hoping for.

Santi struggles with feelings from when he lost his mum. Oly tries to reach out about how he’s feeling, but Santi isn’t forthcoming, not able to articulate what’s going on for him, even when Ms Tan encourages expression through his drawing. Oly con des in Reema that she doesn’t understand what’s going on with Santi, and Reema tries to cheer her up. Angie challenges Matias on his intentions, confused by recent behaviour, and she re-evaluates their relationship. But in wanting to set boundaries, she accidentally cuts off Santi just as he feels ready to seek out her advice. Oly and Reema attend a mentoring event and Oly’s competitive streak is ignited when Reema gets to talk to an inspiring potential mentor. Oly is inadvertently judged on her ability to commit because she’s a mother, so she stays later than agreed, leaving Santi worried at home with Baby J and unable to keep a handle on his anxiety about where Oly is. Bowie returns home and surprises the Chalmers-Davis household with his backpacker girlfriend, and proceeds to trigger Angie’s emotions and hurt Dom’s feelings, before being blindsided himself.

Bernardita encourages Matias and Rosa to seek guidance on their marriage. There doesn’t seem much willingness on either side, until Matias makes some domestic attempts to reach out to Rosa. Angie overcompensates for her previous reaction to Santi, accidentally making him feel uncomfortable about staying at the Chalmers- Davis house. After Dom has an unexpected platonic frisson at the movies, he expresses his regret at not following up the friendship. Bowie inspires him to channel his feelings into a business proposition, but not before Dom admits to Angie that she’s his only friend. Angie reaches her limit with the current living arrangements with Oly and Santi and an argument sends Santi away. Oly is unforgiving, already upset from missing out on the internship she didn’t even know was available, and blames Angie for Santi not being able to stay. Angie and Oly’s disagreement starts up again through the night with a restless Baby J, which sets off a parental values clash. Matias and Santi try to settle their differences in their own way, but Matias’ explanation of the past is unsatisfying to Santi, and sparks a confession from Angie to Oly.

Birdie is putting in efforts to impress those close to Dom, as their relationship progresses. She has a chance meeting with Angie, supports Oly’s career aspirations by inviting her to an upcoming fundraiser event and offers Santi and Rosa an opportunity to expand the clientele of the food truck business. Rosa, whose marriage is in no man’s land, is excited at the prospect of achieving her financial goals and convinces Santi and Bernardita to try some innovations for the business. At the event, Rosa tries to impress, and is surprised to someone from her past; Vince tries to charm Reema, and Reema con des in her mum after she makes a decision about him; Oly struggles with Baby J, until what looks like a win quickly turns into Oly feeling out of place, and she retreats home. Angie’s initial warmth towards Birdie is challenged when she causes an incident involving Oly, for which Angie has to come and rescue, leaving Birdie out of favour with the family.

Oly and Santi’s plans, derailed by a contagious Baby J situation, are forced to stay home instead of having a big night out with their friends. Reema, Vince and the gang prepare for the night, scouting for booze, meandering through the streets of the inner west, spotting a blossoming teacher romance at a local restaurant and ending up dancing and drinking on a grassy knoll overlooking the harbour. Vince and Reema connect after a close call with the cops, Madison gets more wasted, sparking concern, Zac and the others share the ups and downs of a night out. Meanwhile Bowie interrogates Angie’s relationship status, and Oly and Santi remain stuck at home with their rash, trying to make the best of being trapped together, until an awkward revelation puts a wedge firmly between them.

Oly and Santi disagree on how to feed Baby J her first solids, with their previous disagreement still a sore point. Angie is spooked by Santi’s little half brothers playing in her house, igniting some guilty feelings about the consequences of her tryst with Matias, particularly in relation to Rosa. Oly gets her first period since the birth and it is a monster, sending her back to her favourite toilet stall and bringing up bad memories from the day J was born. Santi tries to help, but Oly pushes him away, not wanting to share her raw feelings. Dom and Birdie have an odd exchange, their first since the “honey incident”, ringing alarm bells for Birdie. Angie and Rosa meet, and it doesn’t go exactly how Angie expects, leading her to give some advice to Oly, suggesting a healing “date night” for Oly and Santi. On a high from selling his artwork, Santi takes Oly out for dinner, and they both open up on what their recent disagreement meant for their future.

Madison reaches out to Vince after she and her dad are kicked out of their apartment. Although Vince is eager to help, his attempts to understand Madison’s situation are blocked — she clearly doesn’t want to divulge too much. Vince shares the problem with Reema, but Reema is suspicious — and jealous — thinking that Vince is hiding something more between him and Madison. Reema tries to hide her jealousy, but it puts pressure on Vince and his frustrations boil over when Madison refuses to accept his help. Rosa has a makeover and boozy dinner with a friend, who encourages Rosa to leave Matias, even agreeing to be her wingman on a date with the hot friend from Rosa’s past. A drunk Rosa lets off some steam, more than she normally would, inspiring her to return home and give Matias an ultimatum on their marriage. Dom goes on a health kick in an attempt to bounce back from being ghosted for the first time, but Oly encourages him to look at his part in the situation and forcing Dom to acknowledge the reality of his life.

The Hernandez family busines is threatened when Matias makes a distracted error while they’re driving to an out-of-town food truck job, that not only ruins their immediate takings, but could put the truck out of action for weeks. Frustrations cause Alejandro to announce a big change in the family, forcing Rosa to con de in Bernardita, the whole day testing her decision to stay with Matias. Santi and Oly discover the grim financial reality of parenthood and living in Sydney, causing Santi to think about how they can start building a life when they’re so young, and so broke, but needing space from their chaotic families. Dom and Angie discover that Turtle the Bird is unwell, and they work together to figure out a solution, revealing personal feelings in the process and re-living some of the fun they used to have.

Angie is forced to confront her past, her parents, and how her relationship with them in uenced her own brand of parenting. After a challenging encounter with her mum, Angie finds support in Dom, who he is forced to look at his own part in their relationship. Unexpectedly, Dom helps Rosa with her own situation, as she realises long buried feelings about her marriage to Matias and her place in his family. Taking advantage of Bernardita’s love for Baby J, Santi and Oly have the day to themselves, and explore their erotic fantasies for the first time. Santi is preoccupied with trying to gauge Oly’s true feelings about his new plan, becoming insecure about how it will impact her attraction to him, while Oly evades the issue and convinces Santi to be more open with her about what he wants.

Santi puts his new plan for the future into action, and Oly and J’s life at school heads for a big change. Oly is made uneasy by a comment from Bernardita, and the pressure on herself to keep striving for her dreams is challenged. She takes her disappointment out on Angie. Matias disapproves of Santi’s decision, and Santi struggles to find his place in his new world. Taking the opportunity to bond with a new work friend, Santi comes home to high tension at the Hernandez dinner table, which boils over in more ways than one. Turtle the Bird goes missing, sending Dom and Angie on a mission that encourages a new proposition for their relationship. As a result, they inadvertently leave Oly in the lurch, and she does her best to juggle J and her academic pursuits. Oly and Santi’s frustrations with their respective families causes a confrontation, but an impulsive solution is suggested. The families react to the news in various ways as Oly and Santi move ahead with plans for their future together.
