As dawn breaks, Tommy and Elizabeth share tender embraces together — knowing these moments might be their last. Today is the day Tommy is due to hang. Meanwhile, James Freeman is pleading with the Governor to spare his dear friend's life.

The Reverend Johnson is likewise trying to save the most Christ-like man he knows and prevails upon Private Buckley to forgive his attacker and ask the Governor to have mercy towards Tommy Barrett, a man prepared to die for love. But will any of these interventions work?

Spragg has galvanised the convicts to express their contempt at Tommy's fast-approaching hanging. With prisoners far out numbering the soldiers, what will the outcome be?
