Dave is a bartender with a bit of a reputation as a heartbreaker. Cara is there on a blind date. When her date goes wrong, Cara ends up locked in the women's bathroom. She falls out of the bathroom window, and lands in the arms of Dave, who is hiding outside from a jilted ex. Dave plays the gentleman and takes Cara to the A and E, where over four hours they form a bond. But Cara is reluctant to take things further — she's aware there's something she hasn't mentioned to Dave.

Later though, Dave and Cara spend the night together — but their passion is interrupted by the arrival of Marion, Scarlett, Jasmine and Logan — Cara's mother-in-law, teenage daughters and son. This is the thing Cara had not mentioned to Dave.

Things get worse when she discovers he's only 24 — he wasn't even born in the 80s — and he is shocked to learn that she is 39. Both agree that this relationship is not going to happen. But then, Dave and Cara can't stop thinking about each other. So maybe, love can beat the odds.

Dave has been taking Cara on many dates, to action movies and games arcades, but he's aware she's keeping a little distance between them. When he learns that she's going to the theatre and that he's not invited, Dave decides to show her he can be cultured and mature too.

Dave and Azza attend the theatre show, only to discover it's a primary school concert. Cara is embarrassed when Dave and Azza accidentally cause a commotion and get thrown out. When she learns Dave wants to meet her kids properly, Cara is reluctant — she doesn't want them getting too attached in case it doesn't last. Cara is still burned after she and the kids were abandoned by her husband Stewie, eight years ago.

Dave's mate Azza is down on women after being tormented on a daily basis by his office nemesis Betty. Dave and Azza take refuge at the bar, feeling sorry for themselves. Eventually Cara realises she has to take a risk, and she arranges for Dave to come around and meet Scarlett, Jasmine, Logan and their grandmother Marion. Dave is hopeful that his girlfriend's kids like him, but for Scarlett and Jasmine, it's hate at first sight.

It's a big moment for Dave and Cara — he is going to sleep over at the family home for the very first time. But, things don't go well with little Logan interrupting them every night — he's having nightmares. Cara and Dave are unaware that Logan is being paid by his big sisters to disrupt their mother's love-life.

Things get worse when Dave is egged outside the house — an attack by a gang of 13-year-old boys, intended for Jasmine. Dave wants revenge, but Azza and Hugo tease him about becoming a Step-Daddy and he worries — this is the last thing he wants.

When Cara finds out that the girls are scheming to keep Dave out, she insists they have to be nice. But to Dave, Scarlett and Jasmine admit that they intend to continue to make his life hell. Dave tells them to bring it on, and the girls are left knowing that war has been declared.

Meanwhile, Jen is struggling to fulfil her dream of buying her own home — until she and her gay best friend Dylan hit upon a solution. They will pool their resources and buy a house together.
