Tensions flare when a prawn trawler strays into local waters. Solomon, Russ' second son, is enraged at the injustice of the situation. While Nancy, the chairman's daughter, must evaluate her future after an encounter with the trawler's captain. A long awaited tombstone opening is meant to conclude the grieving period, instead, it reignites tensions and at the all night feasting and dancing following the ceremony it deteriorates.
Russ and Helen, under the influence of a few drinks, allow the sexual chemistry between them to show when they dance together. This is observed by everyone - most especially Russ' wife, Ina. Helen is shunned by the community, and in pain, Helen finds herself turning to Robbo.
Meanwhile, things deteriorate between Paul and Bernadette, ending in a violent row. The shock waves reverberate around the island, impacting most especially on Helen and Nancy, who saw it coming, but did not act fast enough to prevent it. Helen, Nancy and the health workers are frantic and in the midst of this chaos, the election is held. Through all of this, the dengue outbreak grows even more severe. When Helen believes things can't possibly get any worse, Robbo is struck down with the fever.
